November 10th. Boys Rites of Passage preparation
In this monthly meeting, these teen boys will be preparing for the Sacred Fire rite of passage in the spring.
The Sacred Fire ritual comes from the Odawa People of the Michigan area. It is intended to prepare and welcome the boys into their next stage of life in which they will fill a new role in the community with new privileges and responsibilities not as boys, but as young men.
They will learn practical skills to aid them on their 24 hour solo experience as well as start developing relationships with a family or community elder, each other and their maturing selves.
Every culture around the globe since the beginning of man has had this as a part of their way of life. It is only in the last century or so in our modern industrialized lifestyle that we have neglected these critical moments of transition. Taking a cue from the past and drawing on thousands of generations of wisdom, we are intent on re-establishing this practice in our time.
